Throughout the history of human kind, from the understanding of our world as being flat, to string theory and evolutionary darwinian theories, science has fought against the prejudices of religions. Currently, through advances in theoretical physics, we are as close as ever to unveil the hidden equations that would unify the very large with the very small, quantum mechanics and Einstein’s theory. However, there is a conceptual battle that has been going on since the dawn of civilisations between science and religion, as we draw closer to answering some of the fundamental question dealing with the origins of the universe, the pitch for this war is as confusing and blurry as ever. Where does science stop and metaphysics and the need for a transcendent being and religion start?

A three part documentary on the origins of the universe. Produced by Nova and conducted by Brian Greene!
Cosmogony (or cosmogeny) is any scientific theory concerning the coming into existence, or origin, of the cosmos oruniverse, or about how what sentient beings perceive as “reality” came to be. The word comes from the Greekκοσμογονία or κοσμογενία (from κόσμος – “cosmos”, “the world”) and the root of γί(γ)νομαι / γέγονα (“to be born, come about”).
The Big Bang theory is the prevailing cosmological model of the early development of the universe. The most commonly held view is that the universe was once a gravitational singularity, which expanded extremely rapidly from its hot and dense state. While this expansion is well-modeled by the Big Bang theory, the origins of the singularity remains one of the unsolved problems in physics.
